Fremont Peak (13,745')

A couple weeks ago Ben and I climbed Fremont Peak in the Wind River Range.  Fremont peak is the third highest peak in WY and only about 50' lower than the higest (Gannett) and about 30' lower then the second (Grand Teton).  The accent consists of about a 13 mile hike in to a base camp on day one.  The second day consists of the accent, which is about 6 miles round trip but approx 3500' of elevation gain and drop.  This may not sound like alot but the air gets incredibly thin at about 12000'.  During the accent Ben and I were very supprised at how short of breath we both were.  The view from the top was absolutly amazing and we could see into CO, UT and up to the Teton Mountains in Jackson.  We could see about 10 glaciers as well as many of the highest peaks in the west.  It was an amazing trip for both Ben and I but turned out to be alot more difficult and challenging than either of us had imagined.  We had thought we would get out on Sunday evening by about 5PM...instead it took us until Monday at about 3:30PM.

Hope you enjoy the pictures of my beautiful back yard!!!

The beginning of the hike about 7 am on Saturday morning.  You can see the peak between Ben and I about 17 miles away from here.

A view of the peak during the hike in over one of the many lakes you hike past.

Our campsite in Titcomb Basin with a nice view of the peak.

Sunday moring 8:30AM...right before we left for the accent of the peak, which is actually shrouded in clouds at the moment but thankfully cleared up by the time we arrived at 2:15PM

View from the top!!!  The snow below is actually the Fremont Glacier and the domed mountain with snow on top in the distance is Gannett Peak which is the highest peak in WY at 13,804' only about 50' higher than we are right here.  Just to my right is about a 600' cliff down to jagged rock and ice and the wind is blowing about 35 mph and it is probably 15 F with wind chill.

Another view from the top this time looking south towards CO and UT, and yes if is very windy and cold up there.

Attempting to show how steep the accent was.  In the distance is Mistake Lake about 2200' below at this point in the climb.  It was pretty much straight up climbing from boulder to boulder then snow for the last 500'.

Sunset after the accent and decent.

Wide angle view of the Wind River Range from photographers point.  Fremont Peak is the rounded peak on the right and is about 12 miles away from this point.
