Pinedale Volleyball Champs!!!

Tonight we had the tournament for the co-ed volleyball league here in Pinedale.  We have been playing every Monday night for a couple months now.  We only lost one game the whole season....to a team that we beat the first time we played them!  The second game that we played them, they brought on this really good guy and we didn't play very well.  So....tonight we had a rematch with them in the FINAL game!! During the first game, we got down by a lot.....but pulled it back up and beat them!!!  In the second game, we kept the lead the whole game, but kept it exciting up to the last point.......but we WON 26-24!!!!!  Tonight we became the 2008 Pinedale Co-ed Volleyball Champs!!!!  We got really sweet shirts too!!!!!

Just wanted to let you know!!!  We had so much fun....and winning was a cherry on top!

Wild Weekend

Our first snowboard trip of the Winter.  It was a beautiful balmy day of 1F at the top.  We only took a few runs because our noses would get so cold.

Allie and I at our work Christmas Party at White Pine.

Chris and some of the guys from the cabinet shop.

Allie and me with some of the bosses kids...aka our extened family out here.

We had a really busy weekend but it started out with a great relaxing time in the hot tub at the local aquatic center on friday night.  We had to get up early the next day and feed horses and then get packed for a drive over to Thermopolis to drop off a cabinet.  There was a huge snow storm that was forming over the mountains and we were hoping not to get caught in it.  It is about a 4 hour drive each way and we had our office Christmas party at 6PM about 30 mins from town.  It was actually a great drive with very little snow and Allie got to see some of the eastern side of the wind river mountains.  We then had a great evening at our Christmas party after making it back about 5 and getting ready super fast and heading back out.  On Sunday we took Will Grassell up to thee ski resort to take a few runs before we headed down to Rock Springs for our first hockey game.  Unfortuantly we lost our first hockey game but were able to eat at Applebee's, which we had been craving for a few weeks now.  We got back about 11PM and headed to bed to have our Bible Study for the high school kids at 7:15.  Overall it was a great weekend and we are planning on having another busy one this weekend with a hockey tournment on friday and saturday and then the grand opening of the new Jackson Hole Tram at the ski resort on Sunday.  We then head home next Tuesday...We can't wait.

Our first tree decorating experience together!!!

We decorated our tree tonight after hockey practice, and just wanted to share the pictures of our perfect little tree!!!!!!

Isn't it a perfect little tree???!!!! Especially since we went into the woods and cut it down yesterday!!!! It smells wonderful too!!!

Christmas Tree Hunting!!!

Yesterday, we went up to the Choate's house for lunch and an afternoon of Christmas tree hunting! Shawn Choate works at Callaghan with Chris and they go to our church. Shawn and Sherry have 3 really great boys, who are a blast to hang out with!!!
We had a wonderful lunch and then headed into the woods behind their house to find our Christmas trees.....a big one for them and a little one for us!!! We hiked around for a while, seeing all kinds of animal tracks through the evergreens. There was about 6 inches of snow on the ground out there. But, usually there are several feet by this time of year!!! Finally, about a half of a mile in, when found it!!! It was the perfect little tree for our first Christmas tree!!! It was the perfect size for Allie's apartment and was actually quite filled-out compared to all of the other trees out there!!! Once we came to the final verdict of this being our tree, Allie chopped it down!! Since it was beginning to get darker, we carried it out of the woods and back up to the Choate's house, to look for a tree for them closer to the house. It was a wonderful and special experience that we will both always remember!! It was a really cool thing to be able to go into the wilderness and cut down your own Christmas tree!!!

Chris.....this is it!

Our perfect little Christmas tree!!!

Allie cutting it down

Us with the Choate's

Don't be fooled.....Chris ended up on the ground too!

It's beginning to feel a little more like Christmas!!!
We are so excited to be coming home in 2.5 weeks!!!! Yay!!!
Merry Christmas!

Denver and fall

Last weekend we went to Denver, Colorado to a "Dare to Share" conference with 24 students and other chaperones from the high school youth group at the church that we attend. We traveled 8 hours on a school bus down to Denver on Friday, making it to the opening night. If you have ever been to Christmas Conference/Winter Conference with CCC.....it was very similar. We each roomed up with the students and had a great time hanging out with them and learning what they are going through in life. On Saturday, we had the conference (speakers-even Derwin Grey!, praise and worship, skits, etc) in the morning and into the early afternoon. Then we went out into different parts of the city to collect cans for the Denver Rescue Mission as a way to share the gospel with the people of Denver. Our group broke out into teams of 3/4 and collected lots of cans and shared with a whole neighborhood. We heard some amazing stories of the Lord working in that city!!!! We had another meeting that night to end the conference. We got up early the next morning and drove the 8 hours back to Pinedale!!! All in all, it was a great weekend to get to know some of the kids and even the other adults that go to our church!!! We had a great weekend worshiping the Lord and hanging out with some sweet kids!!!

It is starting to get cooler here now. It has actually been quite "warm" lately diring the day...as in like 50-60 degrees!! But the wind has been whipping, making it feel a little cooler. It has snowed a few days, but hasn't stuck yet.....that will come anyday. The mountain tops are covered, but it hasn't reached the lower elevations yet. Everyone says that usually by this time of year everything is white....but it is coming a little late this year.

Hockey is going really well. I (Allison) am starting to get more comfortable and enjoy it a lot more!!! I have even scored some goals!!! Christopher, of course, loves it and is really really good!! We have a great time out on the ice together!

We are also playing on a co-ed volleyball league....we havent' lost a game yet!!! We have several more weeks left of that. I of course love playing volleyball, and Chris really does too!!! So along with bible study, hockey, and volleyball.....our weeks stay pretty busy!!

This past Friday night, we went to see the "Sound of Music" play here in Pinedale....and it was quite a production!! We were both impressed with the talent and sets, for such a small town!! It was really great...and really long. Mary Margaret, our boss' daughter was Marta, one of the Vantrap children in the play....and she did a great job, so we were happy to be there to support her!!!

All in all, life is good. We are staying out here for Thanksgiving. I (Allison) have never been away from home for Thanksgiving.....so I am kinda sad about that. But, we have been invited by several families to join them in their festivities, which has been really nice. We are really looking forward to coming home for TWO weeks at Christmas....counting down.....30 days from today!!!!

Peace.

ice hockey

So we are playing ice hockey here in Pinedale, on a co-ed team. Let me just say that Chris is really really good! He played last year on this team, and he played a few years in Raleigh too, when he was a kid. Let me also say that I (Allison) have never played ice hockey in my whole life....I mean I have only been ice skating with cheap, uncomfortable, plastic rental skates for casual skating with friends, I am from the beach. Needless to say, I am not that great! I have been with Chris to a few "stick and puck" nights, where everyone just plays around, like a free-skate with goals set up. Well as time has gone on I have gotten a little better...I have even gotten better at sudden-stopping. Well before our first real practice on Sunday, I was warming up, building up some confidence and decided to practice skating really fast and then making a quick stop. Well let me just say that I landed flat on my butt and then directly on my head...and today I am suffering from whip-lash. You would think that with all of the padding and equipment that you would be invincible....but play for a bit, and your respect for NHL players increases greatly. Quite painful.....but, it is worth it! It is really fun and super great exercise!!! I really enjoy playing with Chris, and especially watching him play!
We practice (scrimmage) twice a week for a couple of hours...and it lasts from now until about April.....so hopefully by the end of the season I will be a pretty decent ice hockey player!!! ooohhh, I did have one assist, to no other than Christopher!!!

Here are some pictures that we took after practice on Sunday....we will post more as the season goes on.

Check out my crucial gloves! They are quite attractive, especially with holes in them! We got 2 helmets and a pair of gloves for me from the "Bread Basket" here in town (aka the Pinedale goodwill) for FIVE DOLLARS!!! You ask "why 2 helmets?", and that is because we needed to by the second one to get some parts off of it for the first/ "better" one. Maybe that is why my head and neck hurt so badly!!???

THE JOYS OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS!
Precious Estella playing with a bow from one of my presents!

All of the cousins from the Lewis side of my family at the shower!

All of the wonderful hosts for the bridal shower! They did a great job! Thank You!!!

Mama, Corey, Reid and I at the shower (representing the Warren side of my family)!

A Happy Aunt Allie and little La La!

So last Wednesday I boarded a plane and headed back to the good ole' NC!!! After a long day of traveling, I made it into Raleigh, and was greeted by my mom and future mother-in-law!!! It was so nice to see them!! The next day, mom, Mrs. Hodges, and Chris' grandma Shirley and I went to The Bridal Boutique for my dress fitting! I was so nervous about it fitting, but it was perfect! Fit like a glove; I only had to have 3/4 of an inch taken off the bottom. I stayed in my dress for a few hours, while the moms looked for mother dresses....we had a ball!
After running some errands in Raleigh, mom and I headed to MHC! The next few days went by in a blur. Running wedding errands, getting invitations designed, go over registries, etc and spending what was left of the time with my wonderful family and friends, and of course a visit to the New York Deli in AB.
On Sunday, some of mine and my mom's close friends hosted a bridal shower for me. It was trully special!!! I opened a lot of wonderful gifts and got to see a lot of ladies from church and some of my closest friends.....it was great!!!! Sadly though, I had to leave right after that to head back to Raleigh for my early morning flight back to Wyoming. It was soooo hard to leave, ugghhh!!!
When I arrived back in Wyoming, I was greeted by the overwhelming presence of SNOW and COLD. It was freezing, I mean like 19 degrees that night!!! We had an out of the ordinary winter storm over that previous weekend. But, it all melted within a few days, but man, what a winter greeting, from returning from NC. But it was great to finally see my Christopher after about 5 days!!!
Overall, it was a productive and much needed time at home. It was so great to see my family and friends, and see that physical distance doesn't really change the love of family. Oh how I love them and miss them dearly!
Here are some pics of the bridal shower and all....sorry I can't include pictures of the dress fitting time, cause of course Christopher can't see that yet!!!!

Everyday life.....

Hello all!!!

It has been quite a while since we have updated.  We haven't done anything super exciting since the last post by Chris about his hike up Freemont.  But, here is what has been going on.....

Last week Chris' uncle Thold came out to visit.  So Chris had a great time hanging out with him and trying to bugle in some elk. But, their hunting attempts were unsuccessful.  They say that the elk are acting out of character this season, making for one of the strangest hunting seasons ever.....but that is what they say.......it could just be an excuse for no one killing anything (haha)!!!!

The weather is really nice now.  Well actually, at this exact moment it is raining, but I mean "now" as in this time of year in general.  The nights can get down into the 20s, so the mornings can be a bit chilly.....but by noon or so it is up in the 70s!!!  It is really nice, I am rellishing in it...cause soon everything will be covered in snow for 8 months.  The trees are gorgeous..they are blazing orange and golden yellow.  It makes for quite a beautiful setting!!!  We hope to get some pictures, which I will be sure to post!

I (Allison) have starting helping/coaching the 7th grade girls volleyball team here in town.  I have only been helping for a week and the season ends next weekend, but it has been sooo great!!!  I have loved every minute of it!  I go in to work extra early in the morning and work through lunch so that I can leave work around 3 and spend 2 hours with these hilarious girls, trying to encourage them and maybe even teach them a few things!!  We had 2 games today; we won the first match (GO Pinedale Colts!), but sadly, lost the second to a very good team.  I am sad to see the season coming to an end next week....the last game I will be able to go to is Tuesday, because I am going home to NC on Wednesday!!!!

I am soooo excited to go home!!!  I can't wait to see everyone!!!

I don't really have much else to fill you in on......so until next time, peace out!

Fremont Peak (13,745')

A couple weeks ago Ben and I climbed Fremont Peak in the Wind River Range.  Fremont peak is the third highest peak in WY and only about 50' lower than the higest (Gannett) and about 30' lower then the second (Grand Teton).  The accent consists of about a 13 mile hike in to a base camp on day one.  The second day consists of the accent, which is about 6 miles round trip but approx 3500' of elevation gain and drop.  This may not sound like alot but the air gets incredibly thin at about 12000'.  During the accent Ben and I were very supprised at how short of breath we both were.  The view from the top was absolutly amazing and we could see into CO, UT and up to the Teton Mountains in Jackson.  We could see about 10 glaciers as well as many of the highest peaks in the west.  It was an amazing trip for both Ben and I but turned out to be alot more difficult and challenging than either of us had imagined.  We had thought we would get out on Sunday evening by about 5PM...instead it took us until Monday at about 3:30PM.

Hope you enjoy the pictures of my beautiful back yard!!!

Chris

The beginning of the hike about 7 am on Saturday morning.  You can see the peak between Ben and I about 17 miles away from here.

A view of the peak during the hike in over one of the many lakes you hike past.

Our campsite in Titcomb Basin with a nice view of the peak.

Sunday moring 8:30AM...right before we left for the accent of the peak, which is actually shrouded in clouds at the moment but thankfully cleared up by the time we arrived at 2:15PM

View from the top!!!  The snow below is actually the Fremont Glacier and the domed mountain with snow on top in the distance is Gannett Peak which is the highest peak in WY at 13,804' only about 50' higher than we are right here.  Just to my right is about a 600' cliff down to jagged rock and ice and the wind is blowing about 35 mph and it is probably 15 F with wind chill.

Another view from the top this time looking south towards CO and UT, and yes if is very windy and cold up there.

Attempting to show how steep the accent was.  In the distance is Mistake Lake about 2200' below at this point in the climb.  It was pretty much straight up climbing from boulder to boulder then snow for the last 500'.

Sunset after the accent and decent.

Wide angle view of the Wind River Range from photographers point.  Fremont Peak is the rounded peak on the right and is about 12 miles away from this point.

Yellowstone

This Labor Day weekend, Chris, Janice, Ben (from our bible study), and I journeyed to Yellowstone for some hiking, camping, and sight-seeing.  We started our National Park experience with a 10 mile hike to Heart Lake.  About 1 mile from the trail head, into the hike, I (Allison) had developed a crucial, multi-layer deep, raw skin, extremely painful blister.  It was so bad that I couldn't bear to wear my shoes, so I hiked for about 8 miles or so BARE-FOOTED!!  I did wear Janice's shoes for a mile or two on the return-half of the hike.  It wasn't' too bad, but it made for an uncomfortable weekend of hiking and even walking.....I had to wear my Crocs for the rest of the weekend! After an anticipated return to the trail head, we drank up some water and then headed to Old Faithful!!!  We walked around waiting for the predictable geyser to blow, and actually missed the eruption while we were in the bathroom cleaning the dust off of us, from the bone-dry trail.  So then we decided to have dinner in the Old Faithful cafeteria, along with a hungry squirrel (who was running around in the dining room throughout our dinner), to pass the time before the next eruption.  Once we were through with dinner, then we watched Old Faithful blow!  It wasn't the biggest eruption ever, but still awe-inspiring.  After Old Faithful we headed to our campsite at Madison.  We got there a little later than planned, and set up our tent in the dark.  Soon after, we hit the sack.  It was quite warm Saturday night, we all slept pretty-much outside of our sleeping bags.  We were unlucky enough to be placed beside a tent with small children, who weren't aware of people around them....needless to say it was a long night!!!

Sunday morning, we woke up to a beautiful and slightly cooler day.  We cooked some oatmeal and got ready for our day of exploring.  Among our stops this day were Firehole Canyon, the Artist Paintpots (not quite as good as expected), Grand Prismatic Spring and Fairy Falls (which we hiked about 5 miles to get to--in Crocs, remember), Norris Geyser Basin, Great Fountain Geyser-which shot up about 200 feet in the air, just as we were pulling up!!!  After exploring these natural wonders, we headed to West Yellowstone for dinner at Eino's (Chris' favorite place where you get to cook your own meal!) and ice cream at Mooseberry's (another of Chris' favs).  The play we planned to see was closed for the season, so we went to the Imax theater to see a film about Yellowstone.  After the film, we headed back to the campsite for smores and a campfire, then we got ready for a colder night.  It was forecasted to possibly snow that night....but we just got some rain.  We were all cozy in our mummy sleeping bags though!!!

Monday morning we awoke to a brisk, fall-forecasting, day.  We layered on the clothes that day!! We packed up our campsite, after our breakfast of oatmeal, and headed out from Madison.  Then we went up to Mammoth Hot Springs, and then to the Boiling River.  This boiling river (of 130 degree water) pours into the Gardner River (probably about 55 degrees---which is really, really cold for us NC folks!).  But this combination creates a uniquely-delightful experience.  We hopped into this river, which was at the cold part at first, and headed to wear the HOT water pours in.  You can't even touch the hot water for more than a couple of seconds or you would be badly burned!!  You have to find just the right spot, which combines the two waters at the perfect temperature.  There was a cave and then a pool that we relaxed in for a while; it was like a bubbling hot tub!!  Then we had to walk upstream to the entrance to get our towels and other clothes..in the brisk air, it was quite a task!!!  On our way back down into the park from this water-experience, we passed back through Mammoth.  In the middle of the old army barracks there were about 20 or so cow elk and one really big bull elk!!  See the picture below!  After stopping for a quick picture, we headed on to Mount Washburn and Tower Falls.  We were going to hike up to the control tower at Mt Washburn, but with the chilly air and overcast skies, we decided to head to Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.  We awed at the huge falls and then decided to warm up by hiking to Artist Point-overlooking the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone- and then through the back-country to some secret mud pots and hot springs.  We saw some huge moose tracks back there and then Chris and Ben decided to try and follow where they though this moose went.  Janice and I lost them for a while.  Then to save time, we headed off trail (heading to where Chris thought the car was), not knowing if a bear was going to greet us along the way!  (I was a little scared at this point).  But, to no suprise, Chris of course brought us out right at the road at the entrance to where the car was parked!!!  That ended our adventure in Yellowstone.  So then we headed back through Jackson, stopping to eat at the ever-so-good Bubba's Bar-B-Q, to get home to Pinedale.  All in all it was a fun-packed weekend!!!  We were all pooped, but we had an awesome time!

Chris overlooking a boiling mud pot.

Ben, Janice, Me and Chris at Fairy Falls.

Grilling our food at Eino's.  (They give you your food raw and then you cook it yourself at their indoor grills to your liking).  It is a really cool place; the bar/sitting area is covered in dollar bills signed by people from all over and random articles of people's signed clothing.  We left our mark with a dollar bill.

The lone bull elk among the host of cow elk(not seen in the pic) in the middle of Mammoth.

Lower Falls at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

At the middle of our first hike, the 10-mile one, to start our trip.  I (Allison) had tried to bandage up my feet and put my shoes on, but it only lasted for about 5 feet with the shoes on.

Chris and I, with dirty, sun-burned faces, waiting for Old Faithful to erupt.

Hiking and Hangin' etc.

Last weekend we headed up to New Fork Lake, about 20 miles from Pinedale, for a church campout.  We had lots of fun grubbing out with the folks there, and touring around the lake area.  It was really cool for me (Allie) to meet some new people, especially people from church.  We climbed down into this flowing stream, formed by the damn at the lake, and bouldered on the rocks there, testing the waters a little.  We worshiped around the campfire and ate some smores along the way.  Saturday night, Chris, Ben, and I slept in a HUGE tent (made for about ten people!)......and we forgot to close up the tent that night.  No critters came in, but we would have been a little warmer (probably hot, though) if we had zipped it up!!  Sunday morning we woke up and had a service around the campfire again.  After the service, we all walked down to the lake for the baptism of 3 children and 3 adults.  It was an amazing thing to witness this natural baptism in the glorious creation that the Lord has made!!!  It was really awesome!  After we had a cook-out of hamburgers/hot dogs/steaks/etc (which they call a Bar-B-Que here, they are seriously confused-there was no "b-b-q" around!), Chris, Ben, Janice and I drove up into the Wind River Mountains to the Green River Lakes.  We hiked about 4 miles into the mountains to this natural bridge (which is pictured below).  It formed a cave under this huge rock structure, and had a small opening that the stream rushed through.  It was really hot and dry up there....and we were running low on/out of water.  Needless to say, we were ready to get back to the truck after the 4 miles back out of the mountains.  We saw a coyote on the way back, he walked right in front of us!!  We splashed ourselves off in the (freezing cold) lake, before getting back into the truck to drive 45 miles back into town.  Once we made it back into Pinedale, Christopher decided he wanted to get some SWEET tea, from the Cajun Rendevous, the only restaurant in town which has SWEET tea (because the owner is from Louisianna, which by the way was one of the adults to get baptized at the lake on Sunday---in his Wranglers and long sleeve jean shirt too).  Well they were closed, so we headed to the Chinese restaurant here.  We were watching the Olympics and our Chinese waiter loved Ping Pong...imagine that!  Chris was trying to speak what little Chinese we know to him, and of course he thought we were fluent or something!  We were talking to him about China, and he wanted Chris to go there to get lessons in Chinese...haha.  He said he was planning on going back to China in about 4 years to get a girlfriend.  I asked him what was wrong with American girls....and he said "ahh no.......not cute enough".  Well on my fortune cookie, the Chinese word to learn was "girlfriend".  I showed it to him (because he was talking about getting a Chinese girl), and he thought I was saying I would be his girlfriend!  He lit up and Chris was like "No no...MY girlfriend", and pointed to my ring....it was hilarious!  The waiter kept talking about me being his girlfriend until we payed and walked out the door!!  It was a really funny ending to a great weekend!!!  The 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th pictures are from this weekend:

Hiking near New Fork Lake about 20 miles north of Pinedale.

You can see some effects of the fire (from our last post) in the burned trees on the right of the picture.

Allie in front of the JC Penny Motherstore in Kemmerer, WY.

Kemmerer is a town of about 2500 people but is really where JC Penny started in 1902; we drove through there 2 weekends ago when Chris had to go to Evanston for a WY hunter safety course.

Hiking near Green River Lakes with two of our friends out here Ben (Virgina) and Janice (Pennsylvania).  Lots of east coasters out here.  What are you guys waiting on...Come on OUT!

Standing under the natural bridge with the Green River running under it.

A mother moose and her calf up near Jackson Hole.  We took this when my (Allie) parents were here!!  A really rare photo op!

Allie's apartment kitchen.  Pretty nice for little ole' Pinedale huh...

A lone buffalo with the Tetons in the background, also taken when my parents were here.  Man he sure does look tasty!!!
A buffalo burger is really hard to beat.
Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

~FIRE~

It has been pretty smokey around here lately.  An unattended campfire started a large forest fire 20 miles north of Pinedale.  It has been pretty cool at night being able to see the flames hundreds of feet in the air and the huge orange glow of the fire.  The fire has been burning since July 29 and if finally 90% contained.  It has burned almost 12000 acres so far.  We have had rain for the past couple of nights for the first time in a couple of months so that has really helped put out the fire.   Stay tuned to more updates!

Wyoming Bound

Man.....if you want to experience exhileration, then pack everything you own in your car and drive accross the country!!! Well that is what I did one week ago today. Mom, Dad, and I squeezed into my MDX and headed west. It was quite a trip. We journeyed through Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and ended in Pinedale, Wyoming (2367 miles later). We had a great time in Nashville, where we visited the Grand Ole Oprey and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Musuem. Then we rode up the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and later tested our luck at a dingy riverboat casino along the Mississippi River. The next day we drove for hundreds of miles and ten hours through the boring, field-infested state of Kansas....that was a long day. But we ended in the great, clean, and "earthy-crunchy" city of Denver. The next day we drove up into Wyoming, where I got to finally be with my anxious fiancee'!!!!
We took a day to settle in to my "apartment" and rest from all of the traveling. Then on Saturday we experienced Jackson Hole, my parents for the first time! We saw lots of buffalo, a mama moose with her baby in a stream, the "beautimous" Teton mountains!!! We ate buffalo burgers and sat on saddle barstools and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, and on our second visit to the bar, my Dad became buddies with the master distiller for Jack Daniels!!
Sadly, on Sunday, my parents had to leave. What a terrible day that was!!! It was probably the hardest thing I have ever done. But I know that all of the sadness will be worth it! I am so excited about this new adventure in Wyoming, with my soon-to-be husband!!!! I miss everyone at home terribbly, but I am excited for this special time in my life!
I will be posting pictures soon!! Chao for now!
